Machu Picchu

The enigmatic ruins of the ancient city of Machu Picchu, perched high in the Andes mountain range in Peru, sits near the top of the list of many peoples dream destinations. Built by the Inca in the 15th century, this dry stone walled “city in the sky” lay hidden for hundreds of years. Restoration work started in the early 20th century continues to this day, giving visitors a clear picture of what it would have been like in its heyday.

The high altitude and rugged terrain may put off some but there are a range of options for visitors. From highly organised tours to hardcore backpacking on the Inca trail, there is something for everyone. The wet season runs from November to April, with peak season from July to August. Machu Picchu is one of the busiest tourist destinations in all South America and with good reason. It’s a place filled with magic and wonder, set in some of the most stunning scenery on Earth.
